Abstract

A growing body of research is focusing on the mechanisms by which migration affects fertility behaviours, stressing the relevance of the interpretative theories developed by international literature, namely adaptation, socialization and disruption. Nevertheless, few analyses take into account selectivity, a hypothesis that can be hardly tested mainly due to the lack of suitable data.

The aim of this paper is to examine the relationship between migration and fertility behaviours using multi-national longitudinal data. In particular, we compare the reproductive models of foreign women in Italy coming from Albania, Morocco and Ukraine both with the one of non-migrant counterparts in the country of origin and with the one of the native Italians. Appling multivariate analysis methods through multi-process hazard models to information coming from three different data sources (SCIF, FSS, and DHS), we stress the existing differences between migrant and non-migrant women in terms of fertility timing and quantum. In this way, we aim to contribute to the international debate on the fertility behaviours of immigrants.
