Abstract

In this paper we study the role of experiencing uncommon individual family trajectories on subjective wellbeing at older ages. We hypothesize that individuals who experienced uncommon trajectories accumulated stress and negative feelings throughout their life which could exert negative long-term influence on their subjective wellbeing.

We apply sequence analysis and optimal matching on retrospective data from the third wave of the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to calculate distances between individual family trajectories and normative trajectories, defined by representative (medoid) trajectories by sex, birth cohort and country. Then, using data from the first two waves of SHARE, we estimate, separately for women and men, multivariate regression models to assess the association between deviations from normative trajectories and older people's subjective wellbeing.
