Abstract

Childlessness may pose various challenges to aging individuals, especially in settings where institutional support for seniors is weak and children are expected to provide care to their older parents. In our study, we employ an explorative qualitative methodology to investigate what coping strategies may be applied to face these challenges. We analyse 42 in-depth interviews with childless men and women aged 65 or older. Our respondents were mostly worried that childlessness may result in a lack of support and care, especially in case of limitations in activities of daily living. They recognize various actions that may help them remain independent or secure alternative sources of support. However, they also repress thoughts of possible negative scenarios. A defence mechanism like that may indeed temporarily improve their well-being. But by avoiding difficult topics, they risk being caught unprepared for the potential challenges that may unfold in future.
