Abstract
Over the last years, the share of middle-skilled occupation has declined in all the aging economies. Middle-skilled occupations are those in which workers perform routine tasks such as office administration and manufacturing. This trend is connected to advancement of technology, outsourcing of jobs in developing countries and the decreasing importance of manufacturing sector. In the other hand, the share of high- and low-skill occupation has grown. Furthermore, over the last decades in Italy has taken place an increasing ageing of the workforce. The expansion of the population of the older cohorts, as a result of the demographic changes, requires extended working life. The ageing of the workforce could lead to social and economic consequences, from the skill obsolescence to the risk of unemployment. The aim of research is to analyze the consequences of job polarization on older workers and to describe the main evidences regarding the characteristics and training participation of older workers by skill levels. Finally, the research investigate the job transitions across the skill levels, using various sources of data such as Labour Force Survey (ISTAT), Partecipation Labour Unemployment Survey (ISFOL) and Adult Education Survey (Isfol Istat).
