Abstract

Contemporary international migration trends show how sequential migrations including several destinations, such as onward, return and circular migration are increasing. Recent developments on immigration to Europe show a growing need of knowledge on how and why dynamic international migration flows come about, including analysis which are no longer limited to specific groups of migrants (i.e. labor migrants). Using detailed register data, this paper describes outmigration patterns among migrants arriving Sweden 1990-2013. Geographic and temporal aspects of different outmigration trajectories are mapped and described. Additionally, the paper evaluates the estimation bias caused by over coverage in registers by using a recently refined evaluation method based on register trace. Preliminary findings show strong variations in outmigration outcomes depending on origin and reason for immigration, as well as unneglectable bias in total emigration levels. Overall, the empirical results provide a solid background to both policy makers and future studies.
