Abstract

The third round of District Level Household and Facility Survey was used to examine the prevalence and risk factors of incontinence among elderly women (≥40 years) in India. A total of 3,854 women covered in the study and descriptive statistics, chi-square test and multivariate analysis are used as methods for the study. Findings suggest that Urinary Incontinence is a common, debilitating, and costly problem in older women. Overall 1.4% women reported of having urinary incontinence and most of them were currently married. Twenty-three percent women had developed urinary incontinence just after delivery, 36.4% after pelvic surgery, 151% by sexual assault, while 31.7% has developed by other causes. Only 1.2% percent with urinary incontinence were reported of menopause while 1.5% were continuing menstruation cycle. Incontinence is found to be positively associated with number of pregnancies that women had (c2=93.20; p<0.01) and also among women resides in rural areas (OR=2.31, CI=1.70-3.41; p<0.01).
