Abstract
In recent years an increasing amount of research efforts have been devoted to the refinement of the statistical methods for analyzing mortality in small geographical areas. These analyses not only allow to know the distribution of mortality in detail, but also to analyze the relationship between mortality and other contextual variables (e.g. socioeconomic and environmental ones) that could explain the health status of a population. In this context, Italy seems to be a particular interesting case. The country is indeed well known in demography for being among the ones with the highest life-expectancy at birth, however less is known about geographical differences in mortality at the municipal level. To our knowledge, the bulk of previous researches are mainly focused on the regional (NUTS 2) or provincial level (NUTS 3). This work aims to fill this gap by offering a spatial analysis of municipal mortality for Italy in the period 2012-2016.
