Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to focus on migration and fertility intentions in a sample of four post-socialist member states of the EU, namely Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Lithuania. We explore a relationship between the intention to move and fertility intentions to see whether childbearing is expected to take place in a home area or exported to other areas. Determining an existence of such connection allows to better target polices aimed at fertility and migration. In addition, the paper contributes to the demographic literature on fertility and migration intentions in post-socialist countries.

We use the waves 1 and 2 of the Generations and Gender Survey data on which we apply bivariate ordered probit estimation. We find that a positive relationship exists between the intention to move within three years and the intention to have children within three years.
