Abstract

A key role in the internal mobility in Italy concerns the rapid and significant increase of international immigrants. Large part of the growing number of transfers of residence can be today attributed to the internal mobility of no-Italian citizens. However, much remain to be explored with respect to the determinants of such internal flows.

Using Italian Labour Force Survey (ILFS), the main aim of this paper is to analyse the characteristics and determinants of mobility among Italian provinces comparing people born in Italy and the ones born abroad.

Analysing the characteristics of people who move between regions compared to the dominant non-migrant group, the selection hypothesis argues that migrants constitute a select group in terms of observed and unobserved characteristics. The selection operates when internal migrants can be characterized by different personal traits or behaviours than those who do not change residence. The differential characteristics of migrants, despite their places of origin and destination, with respect to the dominant group may be due to compositional factors. In general, migrants tend to be young, more educated, single and childless, and open to innovation. They are also frequently more able and motivated by a desire for personal achievement.
