Abstract

The paper aims to identify the main determinants, once a compulsory school credential has been achieved, to continue studies or to enter the labour market. We use a top-down approach to reach this target moving from a quantitative analysis at regional level (namely Campania) to a qualitative analysis of the historical centre of Naples. The municipality of Naples is worthy of study as marked by a structurally weak educational offer and a growing presence of minor immigrant at school given the relatively recent stabilization of social phenomenon of immigration.
The quantitative analysis makes use of new and unique data set collected by Istat in 2015 on “Integration of the second generation” (ISG)”. Applying logistic regression models, we investigate many different dimensions (school paths and characteristics, peer relationships, origin background and household conditions).
The qualitative analysis concerns students and their parents involved in 2017-2018 inside selected middle schools and associations in the historical centre of Naples, where the presence of second-generation children was particularly significant. The used approach of focus group allow us to understand emerging issues on school paths and labour insertion and to promote useful support actions for school and social inclusion of immigrant immediate descendants.
