Abstract
This paper investigates the determinants of satisfaction for the quality of life (QoL) of persons with and without disabilities. The concept of QoL is identified as a reference framework in relation to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
This study is based on data from the sample survey “Aspects of daily life” (2016), carried out annually by the Italian national statistical institute. In order to identify the main determinants of the satisfaction level, a logistic model was used, estimated on the two populations separately (with and without disability). The covariates included demographic and social characteristics; those related to socio-economic status, material wellbeing, physical wellbeing, social inclusion, cultural participation and interpersonal relationships. Perceived state of health and the economic situation as the most significant determinants of satisfaction. As expected, the state of health is more relevant in the satisfaction prediction of the population with disabilities and other factors are an unsatisfactory economic situation and a limited socialization. Living in less populated territorial contexts improves the degree of satisfaction for life, more for people without limitations. Poor socialization based on the propensity to feel satisfied for life, more for people with limitations.
