Abstract
We analyse the association between fertility rates and wellbeing measured at territorial level. Wellbeing here is measured by means of the indicators of equitable and sustainable wellbeing (ESW from now on) - BES in Italian - collected by Istat since 2013. They are organized in 12 wide domains offering, on the whole, an integrated picture of the main economic, social and environmental phenomena that characterize our country. Our main hypothesis is that the regional variability in fertility related with that in the ESW indicators; namely, we expect that the regions performing better in terms of wellbeing conditions are also those with the highest level of fertility. We also expect that the different wellbeing dimensions have different relations with fertility and that their changes through time also have an impact. We first compare ranking of Italian regions according to the total fertility rates and explore its concordance with each of the regional ranking of the main ESW composite indicators. Then, we apply adequate statistical models in order to analyse the association between TFR and the selected ESW domain indicators. We replicate the analyses above at provincial level, when applicable. Preliminary results confirm our main hypothesis.
