Abstract

Intergenerational relations have strong effect on individual’s well-being and this is particularly true for European immigrant populations: family support is of paramount relevance for the socio-economic integration of immigrants in the destination society. Although studies of intergenerational relations among immigrant families have flourished in recent years, the largest part of these analyses compare intergenerational relations between immigrant and native populations, while disregarding the relevant heterogeneity within the migrant groups. In this work we will consider the survey” Living Condition and Integration of Immigrants” conducted by the ISTAT in 2011. Our sample comprises people 25+, born abroad or at least with one parent born abroad (even if deceased). We aim to study intergenerational contact and whether there are significant variations between some of the most (numerically) relevant  groups of foreigners living in Italy, i.e. Albanians, Moroccans/Tunisians, Chinese, Philippinos and Rumanians. Controlling for parents’ survival for a set of demographic and socio-economics covariates, we aim to explore how adult foreigners living in Italy have contact with their parents living outside the country.
