Abstract

Background and purpose. Location, well-qualified teachers, leaving score, academic performances are the main factors associated to parents' choice for high school taking into account socio-economic household's characteristics. For this reason the school choice may be considered a multi-criteria problem. This paper aims at providing the students and their parents with a tool for synthesize these elements in helping them.

Data&Methods. Applying the AHP on Eduscopio and ScuolainChiaro data, we derive the ranking of high school by taking into account three criteria: the students' performance at school, their academic performances and the school characteristics (such as the number of students per class and per teacher).

First results. Results from the AHP-procedure using only school performances and characteristics highlight the best performances of the classic lyceum. Scientific lyceums rank second - rather close to other lyceum. Entering in the model the academic performances changes the ranking of preference in favor of scientific lyceum, whose value is just a little higher than the classic one, and depresses the values of other lyceum and technical high school. This is due to excellent academic performance of scientific school-leavers mostly in terms of credits at the end of the first year and exams' average score.
