Abstract

This work studies the association between parental divorce and children’s occupational position in Italy. The empirical analysis has three aims: a) to analyse whether, and to what extent, parental divorce is associated with children’s occupational achievement, controlling for education and social background of origin; b) to analyse the heterogeneity of this association, i.e. its variation among individuals with different social origins; c) to study how the effect of parental divorce changes on the basis of the time when parental separation occurred (during childhood, adolescence, etc.) and of the diffusion of parental separation in the region of residence.

Analyses are based on Multipurpose Survey – Family and Social Actors (2003, 2009) and the analytical sample includes 93,391 individuals (3,859 divorced). We analysed data using OLS models and divided the analytical strategy in four steps. The first measures the effect of parental divorce on occupational achievement, whereas the second focuses the heterogeneities of this effect among social classes. The third step analyses the role of the timing of parental separation and the fourth asks if the effects of social origins and family dissolution differ if parental separation and divorce are more widespread in the society.
