Abstract
The contribution intends to give an overview of the most salient aspects of internal migration of the last decade at the level of the 611 Italian local labour market areas. In referring to the book on the paradoxes of internal migration in Britain by Tony Fielding, a literature and empirical analysis is undertaken. The empirical part focuses on the intensities, the age patterns, the frictional effect of distance and the potential effects of internal migration in Italy. Different aspects are highlighted: the differential trends between the metro and the non-metro areas; the question if differences between local labour market areas do exist (and what the causes might be); the role played by the foreign population in the Italian situation of internal migration. The possible cultural, economic and social causes for the national and regional trends are discussed and the effects of the great recession are traced.
