Abstract

The existing literature on fertility of migrants has risen significantly over the last decades in Europe. However, in the field of the study of migrant fertility, the focus has mostly been on the analysis of actual behaviours, while it has lacked reflection on the potential role of the fertility intentions. This gap in the literature is surprising because differently from fertility intentions, actual behavior might be characterised by mistimed or unwanted births or failure to realise fertility intentions. This paper aims at answering the following research questions: 1) how short-term fertility intentions of immigrant differ from natives? 2) Which factors play a different role for the two groups? 3) Are the intention changing over time (or across migrant generation)? 4) There are differences among different origin/national groups? The paper uses data from two national surveys: The "multipurpose survey on families that have at least one immigrant member" and "Family and Social Subjects".  Through a set of regression analysis based on these two datasets, we investigate the factors that most influence the fertility intention in Italy. We propose a simultaneous model to study the determinants of 1) express fertility intention and 2) fertility intentions themselves.
