Abstract

Although a growing body of migration literature has focused on migrants’ health, determinants of self-rated health among older migrants remains a relatively under-researched area so far. The paper proposes a timely contribution to health determinants of individuals with a migratory background being the first attempt to quantitatively analyse the role of different life dimensions in the self-rated health of older migrants in Italy. We analyse the self-rated health (SRH) among ageing migrants in Italy to determine the protective and risk factors.  We use data from ‘Social Condition and Integration of Foreign citizens’ (SCIF)’ survey conducted by ISTAT on a sample of 25,000 individuals between 2011 and 2012. The results show that the odds ratios of reporting good health in later life differ across different ethnic groups; they decrease with age, stressful migratory journey, loneliness and in presence of daily limitations, chronic diseases and obesity, and increase with employment status, economic resources and life satisfaction.
