Abstract

Neighborhood effects are community influences on individual, social or economic outcomes. In neighborhood  effect  analysis  there  are  several  elements that can be included in the analysis to better explain the phenomenon of interest as, for instance, different mechanisms of affecting population that can be detected and included, and their possible interaction,  the  cohort  dimension,  the  time dimension, the spatial dimension and the stratification for individual characteristics as age, education and gender.A key point to estimate neighborhood effects on a specific phenomena is the evaluation  of  the  neighborhood characteristics  and  their summarization. Neighborhood  can be seen as  a  multidimensional  package  of causal attributes, so a  first objective  is  to  construct  a  summary  measure  that  describes neighborhoods in all its aspects and dimensions.  This measure should allow a  multilevel  approach,  given the  number  of  level  and  dimension  needed  to  represent neighborhoods, and should be able to deal with data with different nature and expressed on distinct measure scales.
