Abstract

The characteristics of social networks and their composition determine the availability of social support, which, in turn, is defined as the aid individuals gain from their network members.

Following the methodological approach in Amati et al. (2016), in this paper we derive the support networks of older people in Italy. We use data from the most recent ‘‘Family and Social Subjects’’ (FSS) survey carried out in 2009 by the Italian National Statistical Institute (Istat). The focus is on Italian individuals aged 65 years and more living in mononuclear families (without other members) as singles, or with a partner in the same age group. The help received and provided by these individuals to external people will be related to their network characteristics to enlighten the network role in the resource exchange among people.

To evaluate the network data collection approach used in the Italian FSS, the networks characteristics will be compared to the results from other international surveys (International Social Survey Program, the European Quality of Life Survey, Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, Generations and Gender Survey) collecting information on relational dimension.
