Abstract

Drawing on previous research highlighting the importance of measures of ageing alternative to chronological age, we explore the association between subjective age and grandparental childcare. Data are from the German Ageing Survey (DEAS), a nationwide representative cross-sectional and longitudinal survey of the German population aged 40 and older. Using data on respondents aged 50+ at first interview from all waves carried out 1996, 2002, 2008 and 2011, we replicate results from previous literature with cross-sectional analyses. We also investigate associations between grandparental childcare at wave 3 and subsequent age identity (at wave 4) controlling for covariates at baseline (wave 2). Linear regression models were used. Preliminary results from cross-sectional analyses confirm an age-specific association between grandparental childcare and subjective age. Longitudinal models hint to a causal interpretation of the positive association between grandparental childcare and youthful subjective age. Next steps will investigate the association between grandparental childcare and other dimensions of age identity.
