This study aims to analyse and compare the performance of several indicators of socio-economic conditions of a population. We will perform a statistical analysis of the spatial patterns of the infant mortality rate, the vulnerability index, and other mortality indexes, such as the mortality sex ratio at old ages, at provincial level in Italy. We will assess whether simple, widely available demographic measures may still nowadays serve as sentinel indicators of the economic development and the social wellbeing in Italy.
