Abstract

The topic of migration intentions and return migration has been analyzed according to various theoretical approaches (Constant, Massey, 2002; Stark 1996; Dustmann, 2003; Coleman, 1988). The affirmation of contrasting approaches refers to the complexity of factors which orienting the migration intentions. On basis of Istat data about “The Condition and Social Integration of Foreigners Citizens”,  a statistical survey carried out over the 2011 and 2012 , this paper aims to explore the migration propensity of foreign citizens living in Italy. The analysis  takes into account different factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, the individual migration background, the context of personal relationships as well as some aspects related to social integration in host countries. According to the empirical evidence on determinants of return behavior  and return propensity of migrants, the association of different interactive factors was tested by using a binomial logistic regression model.  The objective is to estimate the probability of propensity to stay in Italy as opposed to that to return to their country of origin. The sample used to estimate the model consists of approximately 16,000 foreign citizens older than 15 years.
