Abstract
The contribution focuses on the migration trajectories of the foreign population living in Italy. Statistical information regarding the emigration process from the country of origin, the settling in Italy, the internal migration and the migration intentions are used to classify the foreign residents into clearly distinguished groups. Also information regarding the importance of support providing information and financial and other help through existing networks and the process of legalization of the stay in Italy are included. Socio-demographic information at the individual and family level are used to describe the different clusters of foreign residents with different mobility trajectories. The migratory trajectories are placed in the life cycle stages also considering information regarding study, labour and family formation. The authors expect to identify specific migratory trajectories for foreigners having an Italian partner.
The contribution contributes to the understanding of the heterogeneity of the foreign population residing in Italy and their geographic mobility.
The contribution is based on data of the “Indagine statistica multiscopo sulle famiglie con stranieri - Condizione e integrazione sociale dei cittadini stranieri”, 2011-2012 conducted by Istat.
