Abstract

Previous studies have shown that parental divorce has negative consequences on parent-child relations, a negative effects has also been documented when considering grandparents-grandchild relations. Despite the bridging role of parents is often called into question to explain grandparent-grandchild relations following parental divorce, to the best of our knowledge there have been few studies that have explicitly and directly tested what is the role of parent-child contact in affecting grandparent-grandchild relations. Investigating this nexus is the aim of the present paper. Data from the last two waves of the Family and Social Subject Survey (Italian National Statistical Office) are employed to explore the role of (non resident) father-child relations in shaping grandparents’ support to their young (i.e. below age 14) grandchildren. The results of the multivariate analyses suggest that the amount of contact between non-custodial fathers and their children operates as a bridge in paternal grandparent-grandchildren relations, whereas the relationship between grandchildren and maternal grandparents does not seem to be significantly affected by the intensity of father-child relations.
