Abstract

After its independence in 1956, Tunisia knew, strong changes in its marital system. The most important transformation is the spectacular delay in the age at first the marriage of both women and men. This situation engendered an unprecedented rise of single women's proportion among young adults. The Latter are faced with their own aspirations, the traditions and the various compulsory constraints. In a country where the marriage is the dominant standard and the only shape of putting in couple authorized by the law, the choice of the spouse was very influenced by the family and the meeting between the future spouses was generally very controlled. There is no investigation or scientific study which can inform us about the kind of relations that takes place in the couples before the marriage. Nothing on the progress since the first meeting until the marriage.

Our work, based on an ongoing qualitative survey realized in Big Tunis with around thirty single men and women, sets out to get a better understanding of the issue. We are especially interested in this communication in the spaces of loving meetings and more particularly the first meeting: place, conditions, initiations, the pressures, etc...
