Abstract

Bangladesh has shown remarkable rise in life expectancy since the last few decades. This paper investigates the change in age and sex specic mortality patterns over time for Bangladesh (as biological determinants) behind this ongoing mortality transition. The analysis of dierent aspects of mortality and longevity indicates that mortality is continuously declining in Bangladesh since the 1970s whereas steady decline is observed among infants, children and young women. Although this transition is visible across the whole age spectrum for both sexes, still the observed pattern indicates the presence of mortality selection in Bangladesh. Fitted mortality models indicate that mortality in dierent stages of lifespan are not same for both sexes. Analysis of modal age at death justied the shifting mortality hypothesis for Bangladesh, which indicates imminent aging in near future for female.
