Abstract

Since 2008 Italian National Institute of Statistics has started a new survey in order to collect data about semisuper and supercentarians (people aged 105 and 110 and more years). At January 1st 2016 a complete database daily updated has available with the following variables for each person: name, sex, date of birth, date of death, age, marital status, birth municipality, residence municipality.

Using the database we would like to show the exceptional increase, in the last seven years, of this population group: how many are they? Where do they live? Are more males or females? These are just some of the questions that can be answered thanks to this survey.

Afterwards, we would like to calculate mortality rates using the extinct cohort method, taking into account that migrations are very rare for very old people; so, we would like to arrive at an estimation of life expectancy at the age of 105 and more using only the deaths for which exact age has been carefully substantiated.

The paper wants to stress the importance of a validated and updated database in order to obtain more precise estimates and closer to real values.
