Abstract

Socioeconomic factors account for a significant part of the total burden of disease in the population of both industrialized and less developed societies. My Ph.D. research aims to analyze cancer risks in relationship to different socioeconomic status (SES) in the Lazio region. The main goal is to determine the magnitude of social inequalities in the whole disease pathway: from incidence to mortality, analyzing as well information on quality of care and treatment taking into account cancer related comorbidities. This study will focus on four common cancers in Italy such as lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and stomach cancer. Incident and prevalent cases will be identified from the Hospital Information System (HIS) since the regional cancer registry has not been established yet. Estimates will be validated at a micro-level using two local registries (Latina and Viterbo) and at a macro-level using the MIAMOD method (Mortality and Incidence Analysis MODel). Comorbidity in cancer patients will be studied using the Social Network Analysis (SNA). Data will be linked with the 2011 census data in order to assess individuals’ SES. Differences in cancer incidence and mortality will be assessed separately for men and women.
